Power Generation Turbine Balancing Facility
Lizardos designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and process piping system for the world’s largest power turbine generator balancing facility.
The facility is capable of balancing a 180 megawatt (MW) power plant turbine generator. The facility consists of a 33 foot diameter x 90 foot long blast bunker constructed with 11 foot thick reinforced concrete walls. The bunker is surrounded by a high bay service facility housing motors, ancillary equipment and systems and control room. The turbine is overspun via a 10,000 horsepower (Hp) motor at 3,150V and drive train.
Lizardos designed the power for the facility including 10 MVA stepdown transformer (13.2kV to 3.5kV) for the drive motor and associated variable speed drive, 3 MVA stepdown indoor transformer (13.2kV to 460V) for mechanical loads, motor control centers, lighting and lightning protection. Mechanical design included four air handling units to serve the high bay facility, the bunker, the control room, and the transformer switchgear room. The air handling unit installed capacity exceeds 100,000 cfm. Included in the design are chilled water, heating hot water and process cooling water distribution systems and pumps. Cooling water distribution consisted of a 16-inch water main from the site’s condenser water loop.
Lizardos developed the equipment arrangement and process piping for the turbine lubricator oil system including the location of 10,000 gallon oil storage tanks, pumps, vacuum pumps, etc. in the oil pit. The oil pit required a ventilation system designed in compliance with OSHA
