RiverBay Corporation at Co-Op City

Burner Evaluation and Efficiency Upgrades
Bronx, NY

The project at RiverBay included two levels of evaluation and testing to develop a final plan. The facility was under decree to upgrade its boiler/burner system(s) to eliminate the use of #6 oil as a fuel source in the boilers. Lizardos, in conjunction with the burner manufacturer (Todd), conducted feasibility testing to ensure that the existing burners were capable to be converted to burn #2 oil, while maintaining the state required limitations on emissions and provide no negative impact to boiler operations. Additional testing was conducted to evaluate the boiler(s) efficiency profile.

The resulting project to modernize the boiler system, increase efficiency and bring it to compliance included:

  • Replacement of the burner fuel oil tips for new fuel and low NOx requirements
  • Replacement of the burner and combustion control system(s);
  • The addition of variable frequency drive to the flue gas recirculation system for tighter control;
  • Installation of economizer into the existing boiler exhaust gas connection breeching before the stack.
